The Mercer’s Missing Link Caddis is one of the most innovative dry flies ever tied. Designed by Mike Mercer, this versatile pattern bridges the gap between caddis, mayfly, and spinner imitations — making it a powerful all-around trout fly when fish are feeding selectively near the surface.

The Missing Link’s unique blend of materials gives it a lifelike, semi-spent silhouette that trout find irresistible. Its sparse elk hair wing, shimmering antron fibers, and hackled thorax allow it to ride perfectly in the surface film — visible to anglers yet subtle enough to fool wary fish.

Originally tied to imitate the final stage of a caddis emergence, anglers soon discovered that trout would take it as a mayfly, spinner, or crippled emerger. That flexibility has made it a go-to pattern across the western U.S. and beyond.

Available in olive, tan, and rusty brown color variants to match regional hatches, Mercer’s Missing Link Caddis is a proven producer in both freestone and tailwater rivers — perfect for dry-fly purists and Euro anglers alike.
